These bands assume an adult light-breed riding horse in moderate condition (BCS 5). Build adjustments are applied by the calculator above.
| Height | Expected weight (light build) | Typical type |
|---|---|---|
| 13.2 hh (54 in) | 650–800 lb | Large pony |
| 14.2 hh (58 in) | 800–950 lb | Large pony / small horse |
| 15.0 hh (60 in) | 850–1,050 lb | Small riding horse |
| 15.2 hh (62 in) | 950–1,150 lb | Typical riding horse |
| 16.0 hh (64 in) | 1,050–1,250 lb | Large riding horse |
| 16.2 hh (66 in) | 1,150–1,400 lb | Warmblood |
| 17.0 hh (68 in) | 1,250–1,500 lb | Tall / draft cross |
Build moves the band more than height
A stock-horse type and a lean endurance type can be the same height and differ by 150–250 lb, mostly in muscle and bone. Draft and draft-cross horses sit well above the light-breed band for their height, while compact pony types sit below it.
The calculator applies a build factor, but the honest answer is that height gives you a rough neighbourhood, and the weight tape plus a condition score give you the answer. If you want a single number to manage, manage body condition:
Better target: aim for BCS 5 on the 9-point scale and a weight that stays stable month to month. Use the condition score check, not a chart, as your benchmark.

- Buying a horse unseen. An advert claiming a 17 hh warmblood weighs 1,000 lb does not add up; this check flags it.
- Estimating a dose weight. If no tape is to hand, height plus build gives a starting estimate — but tape or scale the horse before deworming.
- Tracking a rescue or rehabilitation case. Serial weights against the band show whether gain is real.
- Spotting a mis-recorded measurement. It is a fast way to catch a girth or length error from the weight calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a 15.2 hh horse weigh?
A typical light-breed 15.2 hh horse in moderate condition weighs about 950–1,150 lb (430–520 kg). Stock and draft types sit higher; compact pony types lower.
How much does a 16 hh horse weigh?
Roughly 1,050–1,250 lb for a light riding build, and often 1,250–1,450 lb for a warmblood or stock type.
Can I judge a horse’s weight by height alone?
Only roughly. Bone, muscle and fat move weight a long way at the same height, so use a weight tape and a body condition score for anything that matters.
