One hand equals four inches, or 10.16 cm. The part that trips people up is the notation: 15.2 hh means fifteen hands and two inches, not fifteen point two hands.
That also means there is no such height as 15.5 hh. The inches part only ever runs 0, 1, 2 or 3. Common heights converted:
| Hands (hh) | Inches | Centimetres | Typical type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8.2 | 34 | 86 cm | Miniature horse |
| 11.0 | 44 | 112 cm | Small pony |
| 12.2 | 50 | 127 cm | Pony |
| 13.2 | 54 | 137 cm | Large pony |
| 14.2 | 58 | 147 cm | Small horse / large pony |
| 15.2 | 62 | 157 cm | Typical riding horse |
| 16.2 | 66 | 168 cm | Large riding horse |
| 17.2 | 70 | 178 cm | Very tall / draft cross |
| 19.0 | 76 | 193 cm | Record-breaking draft |
Where the line between pony and horse sits
Traditionally, anything under 14.2 hh (58 inches / 147 cm) is a pony, and 14.2 hh and above is a horse — although a stout 14.2 hh pony-type is still often entered as a pony in competition. Whole registries and disciplines use their own cut-offs, so treat the boundary as a convention rather than a rule of nature.

Height is measured at the highest point of the withers, not the head or the croup, and only with the horse standing square on level, hard ground.
- Horse or pony standing quietly with the head in a normal position, not stretched up or down.
- A rigid measuring stick placed vertically at the withers; a soft tape alone tends to sag and under-read.
- Measure to the nearest half-inch or centimetre, then convert.
Height at maturity is a useful check on growth: a foal reaches roughly 60–65% of adult height by twelve months, and the age calculator covers the growth timeline.
Frequently asked questions
How many inches is 15.2 hands?
15.2 hands is 62 inches, or 157.5 cm. The ".2" is two inches, not two tenths of a hand.
How tall is a horse in centimetres?
A typical riding horse of 15.2 hh is about 157 cm. Multiply hands by 4, add the extra inches, then multiply by 2.54 to get centimetres.
Is 14.2 hands a pony or a horse?
By the traditional definition, 14.2 hh and above is a horse and anything under it is a pony — but the boundary is a convention and some registries and disciplines draw it differently.
Why do horses use hands at all?
The hand was originally the width of a human palm. It survives because it divides neatly into four inches and gives a convenient scale for the range of horse heights.
